Internal data from Lands of America lists $352 million in land and rural property for sale in the Bayou State. This represents a combined 97,019 acres of land for sale in the state. The most expensive property listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $17 million, though the median price for land for sale in Louisiana came in at $355,832. The average price of land advertised for sale in Louisiana was $607,272. Lands of America research shows that over half the land in the Pelican State is privately owned. Louisiana bills itself a year-round "Sportsman's Paradise" for its diverse array of outdoor-recreation opportunities that include deep-sea fishing, hunting, biking and hiking. The state's coastal wetlands attract numerous migratory bird species, while the inland swamps and hardwoods are home to alligators, deer, wild turkey, woodcock, snakes and bears. In terms of its size, Louisiana is the country's 31st-largest state, covering an area of 51,843 square miles (33 million acres). Of its total landmass, 43,204 square miles (83 percent) is land, while the remaining 9,174 square miles comprises water. Less than ten percent of land in Louisiana is public land (i.e. national and state parks, national forests, BLM land). As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in Louisiana. Of Louisiana's 64 counties, Calcasieu Parish had the most land and acreage for sale, while Avoyelles Parish was trending recently as the county with the most land sales recorded through the Lands of America Comparable Sales program.
